This E46 can be reset by the following method. With the key in the off position push and hold the odometer trip reset button ( left button ). While holding it turn the key to the first position. Keep holding it ( about 5 seconds ) until one of the following words appears on the display; "Oil Service" or "Inspection" with "Reset". Press and hold the trip reset button again until the word "Reset" starts to flash. While "Reset" is flashing press the button again briefly. The display will show the new interval and and show "End SIA." If you don't see the "Oil Service" or "Inspection" from above, you must use up 2.5 gallons of fuel before this procedure will allow you to reset the light.
To reset the oil service light manually on a 1996 BMW 318i, disconnect the battery. Leave it unhooked for 10 to 20 minutes.

Nope. All BMWs have timing chains.
It's a small electronic device that tells the car's computer that you've changed the oil and it resets the oil change indicator lights. You can order the tool from Bavarian Autosport.
Yes,BMW 318i 2000 can go up to the life span of 400000 if every time you changing oils you use recommended oils and service parts.
i know that to reset all the the green bars/yellow or red service lights on my 1989 318i i need to take it to a BMW repair shop and they open the hood and stick this weird looking Lightsabre-handle thing into a plug and it resets the lights on the dashboard. im sure its the same for all BMW's.
where is the temperature sensor 1993 BMW 318i
No. The 318i is a normal Benzine Motor. The 318d is diesel.
There are a number of sources to get a oil/service reset tool. Bavarian AutoSport is one that I trust. (Disclaimer: I do not work for them.) It is an easy tool to use, but you need to pay attention to routine maintenance recommendations (belt replacement, especiallt timing belts or chains, etc.), and not just reset the light for oil changes.
