Sometimes college applications will ask questions of potential applicants. If an application asks why a student is applying to a particular course, the applicant should honestly explain how it aligns with their goals, how they love to learn, and how they are eager to be part of the program.

There are several acceptable answers: 1-'The class is needed for my expected future career,' 2-'I've always been interested in the topic, and this class will allow me to learn more.' 3-I need the course for my major,' 4-'The professor has a great reputation, and it's a subject in which I'm interested.'

If you were to major in art at Yale as an undergrad would you first need to get into Yale College in general Or could you apply with an intended major in art?

I graduated from Yale with a B.A. in Art in 1991. The Yale admissions process does not include "intended majors". All applicants to Yale College submit the same application materials regardless of intended major. You will not have to "declare" a major until your sophomore year. So focus on the application process in general. For more information, check out the Yale admissions Frequently Asked Questions pages: http://www.yale.edu/admit/faq/applying.html
