A note from your doctor will be proof that you were actually sick. Many companies have policies stating that if an employee misses three or more consecutive days due to illness, then that employee is required to provide a doctor's note when returning to work. Many companies will terminate an employee's job if they feel the employee is missing too much work. And, quite often, they are within their legal rights to do so, especially if they have a "fire at will" policy. If you are concerned about losing your job due to illness, check with the HR department at work.
Also, many companies have new employees read and sign a "Company Policy" manual when hired, which explains the company's policies regarding things like that. If you signed one when you were first hired, ask to see it so you can read how the company may have addressed that issue in the manual. If they don't have a "Company Policy" manual that addresses that, or if they never informed you of company policy regarding sick leave, then you may have a better case for keeping your job.
