How do you ride a horse in minecraft version 1.6.2?

Before you can ride a horse, you must tame it. To tame it, right click on it with an empty inventory slot. It should run around like crazy and eventually throw you off. Continue to repeat this process until while riding little hearts appear. now, when you dismount (left shift) you can right-click the horse. Right-click it and add a saddle to the inventory slot to the left. Once it has a saddle, you can ride it in any direction you want.
