In terms of CDs and DVDs, 'Rip' means extract content. In this case, 'to rip a CD' means to copy the content to the computer and save it there. The application 'DVD Rip' does just that.

DVDs are important and movies still support it, but more movies are starting to support HD DVDs or Blu-Ray Discs, the difference between them is that normal DVDs can store up to probably 5GB of space while HD DVDs or Blue-Ray Discs can support HD Music, Games, Movies, Videos etc. and stores about 10GB of space
No you cant directly put movies onto itunes because they aren't mP4 files. Though there a lot of programs that can rip dvds into mp4 files. If you're paranoid about downloading a program online (in case you get a virus) you can use the program i bought at Jb HiFi. Its called iStudio-6. It works only on burnt dvds though. But if you record something with a USB on your TV (absolutely anything) and put that recording on your computer. From there you can rip that into an MP4 File.
