No, she DOES NOT die. Zelda will give Midna the power of the triforce so Midna could survive in the light without dying. Zelda will then disappear, and once you've done all the temples and made you way through the extremely short castle, you will see Zelda taken hostage by Ganon and you will have to fight her, for she is possessed and used as a human puppet.

Because, in the first game, Link goes out to save the legendary princess Zelda. Link generally starts out as a kid only the locals know about, then becomes a hero. Zelda is always well known. It makes more sense that the legend is about Zelda, doesn't it?
