You click on the disk icon to save the document.

No not at all, just click on the disk icon in the tool bar and the old version will be replaced with the new. also any time you make changes and attempt to close the document you should get a prompt that asks if you want to save your changes. The only time you would want to rename the document is if you need to save both versions for later reference.
If you were using a particular application before losing your data try reopening the application from the task bar and this will be displayed as documents recovered. you either save it or remove it. Hope this helps
With Move tool you can Move objects (layers) in your document, or move layer from one document to another. Also when this tool isactive you can align and distribute objects from Options Bar (below menus)

You go to "File" and click "Save". There will be a bar on the bottom saying "Save as: Document 1". Click on the Document 1 and you should be able to retype it. Then click "Save" or "OK" and you will be good.
