By tapping "More" on the bottom right hand side (when the text is open), scroll down and tap "Save Attachment". Then tap "Save".

Dont open the slideshow, but hold down on the message with the picture in it for a few seconds, then let go and tap it again right after. The message options should come up, tap "save content" and then select the item you want to save and hit save.
