Unfortunately you can't. However, you can use the Add Path tool from the menu bar or the Add > Path menu item to pop up the New Path dialogue. You can set properties of your path there, and when the window is open you can free draw a path on the map similar to the measurement tool. The added benefit is that the path can be saved and its visibility state toggled. The downside is that you can't find out the length easily. It can be done by exporting the path as KML and calculating the distance with a site such as http://www.emaltd.net/Google/gec/utilities/ or http://www.craterfish.org/googleearth

Yes. Google Earth Professional also allows you measure area, but it is expensive. Alternatively you can use the free version of Google Earth, mark the area to be measured as a path. Then save it as a kml file. Programs like EasyAcreage can then read these kml files and calculate the acreage for you. This method is remarkably accurate. See a case study where the accuracy of this method was used to measure the size of a tennis court. The KML Tools Project and Zonums area tool (in links below) is an easy way to measure area online.

If, for example, you enter an address in the Search/Fly-To panel you can save the placemark "permanently" to your saved places by right-clicking on the feature and select 'Save to My Places'. Likewise, you could drag the placemark from the search panel to the Save Places folder. Then when you exit Google Earth, the new placemark at that address will be saved in your saved places file and reloaded when you restart Google Earth.Another way is Google's Map Maker which allows you to make edits to the map, move placemarks, add/changes labels, etc. and if those changes are accepted, your edits/changes will eventually be reflected in Google Earth and Google Maps. Note that Map Maker is not available in all areas and countries.
