Was is the past tense of the verb to be for 1st and 3rd person singular. The French verb to be is être. The imperfect stem is ét-. The passé simple stem is fu-. The past participle is été. Here are some examples: She was happy. --> Elle était contente. I was attacked. --> J'ai été agressé(e). The church was erected in 1748. --> L'église fut construite en 1748. To say was, you would say était. You should be aware, however, that if you want to say something like "He was walking", you have to use a whole different verb tense. You can't just say Il était promené. You have to use the imparfait and say Il promenait.
