In some uses they are. "This coming week" and "Next week" mean the same thing (usually). However, you wouldn't use "next" in this sentence: "Your grandparents are coming to dinner." or this: "Watch this space for coming events." You couldn't use "coming" in this sentence: "After waiting an hour, I am finally next in line." or this: "The next time we go into the city, I want to eat at the new French restaurant."
