it really doesnt say but he is not old as old as he looks in the story. because he was a hobbit but he worked by the river when he was by the river and there was a king he had the ring and he dropped it in the river. he jumped in because his friend dropped something in there to. he saw the ring and took it the ring had powers and changed him into the creature he is.
