Algonquian is not the name of a single language but a very large family of related languages spoken by people in many different parts of North America.

For that reason there are many different words of greeting in the Algonquian languages.

Among the Wampanoag, Narragansett and their neighbours the word wunnegin (welcome!) was used, from wunne, meaning good.

Among the Powhatan tribes, the greeting chamah was used.

The Cheyenne word for hello (used only by men) is haáahe.

The Ojibwe have many different words for hello, including hoy, boozhoo, haw, aahaaw, gwekwe', waajiye and aanii.

The Abenaki word for hello is kway.

There are many more examples.
