First, "I have" in Spanish is "Yo tengo." Some Spanish-speakers omit the pronoun, so you may hear just "Tengo"-- Tengo dos amigos (I have two friends).

The article "a" can be either masculine (un) or feminine (una) depending on which noun comes next. (Yo) tengo un libro = I have a book. But, Tengo una hermana = I have a sister.
