To say uncle in Lao one must know the relationship of those involved. If your mother is older than your uncle than you call the uncle "Na Bau". If your mother is younger than your uncle than you call your uncle "Loung". If the uncle is on your father's side and younger than your father than you call your uncle "Au". If the uncle is on your father's side and older than your father than you call your uncle "Loung". P.S. When referring to any elements that are not is not the country of Laos itself, it is customary to call it Lao. Even the the country of Laos is referred to as Patet Lao. Its people are khon Lao. Its food is ahan Lao... and so forth.
