An epoch is just any given time period usually marked by specific events. For example, one might describe the period of the French Revolution as "the epoch of belief,...the epoch of incredulity" (Bonus points if anyone knows what novel that's from...)
An epoch is a period in time. Describing some, usually, extended event or life but of no specific length. For example you could say the epoch when the earth was forming, or the epoch of the renaissance.
