St. Catherine of Assisi, also known as Saint Catherine of Bologna, was an Italian nun and mystic who lived in the 15th century. She was known for her piety, humility, and dedication to serving the poor and sick. She founded a convent in Bologna and was later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
There were multiple saints known as St. Catherine in the world, but the most famous is St. Catherine of Alexandria, a Christian martyr from the 4th century. Other St. Catherines include St. Catherine of Siena, a 14th-century mystic and Doctor of the Church, and St. Catherine Labouré, who had visions of the Virgin Mary in the 19th century.
St. Catherine of Siena is one of three women who have been named as Doctors of the Church and the only one from Italy. The other two are St. Teresa of Avila and St. Therese of Lisieux.
