Is a leaf cutter a carnivore?

Leaf cutter ants go out to collect pieces of leaves that they cut off, then take what they have collected back to the nest. In the nest special worker ants prepare the leaf to grow a special fungus that grows into little lumps that the ants feed on. So you can see that what the ants eat is not flesh, but bits of fungus that they grow, much as humans grow mushrooms for food. So we say that they are not carnivores, but fungivorous or mycophagous, two words that mean the same thing: "fungus-eating".

What is the size of a leaf-cutter ants hill?

There is no simple single answer to this question. Even a smallish leaf-cutter ant nest can be several metres across and a few metres deep, with a bit of the mound showing above ground. Also, there are dozens of species of leaf-cutter ants and some have smaller mounds than others. Leaf-cutter ants also live in a number of different places with different soil and climate, even though they all live mainly in conditions not far different from tropical rainforest, the conditions are enough to affect the nest sizes. Remember too, that figures for the largest nests do not mean that every nest you see will be about as large as that. Still, the large nests can be very large. Some are tens of metres (say 30 metres) across and several metres deep. They could contain a fair-sized house. What is more, such a colony cannot easily make such a nest much larger, but they branch out and make smaller nests (that also can be pretty large) like satellites or "suburbs" around the main nest. We could say that such a cluster is a compound nest. The population in one of those compound nests is about several million ants, about as large as the population of the largest human cities.
