The exact translation is "God morn !" ( go mawn ) but this is not what Norwegians most often say in the morning.

The usual is "God dag" , literally good day. The pronounciation varies by region, and can be :-

  • Go dar
  • Go darg
  • Goddar
  • Goddarg
  • Got-darg
  • Goddargoddar ( almost forgot Hallingdal ! )

The other common greeting is Hej - hej ! ( hay hay ).

This sounds a bit off-putting; the good news is that most Norwegians speak very good english.

"How are you" in Norwegian is "hvordan har du det?"

You could also say "hvordan går det med Deg?" which means "how are you doing?"

The most appropriate translation would be; "Hvordan har du det?".

But the most common way to ask someone how they are is saying "hvordan går det?". This is the more laid-back way.
