Do that not in adirect way. Act like nothing happened. If you have a sense of humour use it. He's right, don't do it directly. If you feel you must say something do it in a letter so that he can read it when he is alone and can think about it without having to react in front of you. You should probably just say "I'm sorry" or something to that effect.
