By any available method which reduces contact of iron with atmospheric oxygen. The simplest method is covering ironwork with thin layer of oil or wax.

In order for you to keep your iron pot from rusting, you will need to keep it away from any water or moisture. I have also found that coating the iron, such as a seal or paint will dramatically limit the amount of rusting.

Other than the tank rusting thruogh, I would expect the leak to be from the hoses at the fuel pimp or the fuel pump seal.
