You have to go to the camp menu, where you will have the option to select a book to read. Once you have done this you will gradually progress through the book whenever you camp or rest in a tavern. You will see a message once you complete the book. One of my favourite games :)

In Mount and Blade, you can acquire books by looting them from defeated enemies or purchasing them from book merchants in towns. To read a book, simply go to your inventory, right-click on the book item, and select "Read."
