Try to get a contact name for your letter. If the ad says who to direct the letter to, use that person's name. If it doesn't, then use a greeting that is not offensive. When in doubt, use to whom it may concern, but try to avoid that if you can. Never use dear sir, if you don't know the recipient is indeed a man. And if you really are undecided what to do, just jump into your cover letter.2. Look carefully at the ad and see what skills they're seeking. It's okay to pump up some of your cover letter with what your experience has been, but a potential boss wants to know what you can do for them. And use some of the keywords in that job ad, because, with the high number of people looking for jobs, screeners are kicking out applications that don't include what hiring managers are looking for.3. Really, job managers can spot a cover letter that's been copied and pasted a mile away. It really doesn't take long to write a few paragraphs about what you know how to do, and if you copy and paste, you risk sending the wrong cover letter to the wrong person.5. Try to keep it fairly short. You want your letter to be long enough to spotlight your skills, but not so long that you risk losing your audience. Nobody has time to sit and read a 2,000 word letter, and really, they don't care that much about you. Tell them what you can do, how it will benefit them, and give them a way to call you back. That's all there really is to it.6. Don't tell them all your personal problems. Companies care about how you're going to meet their needs, not about how you need money for your bills or if your kids are sick. Stick to business, not personal matters.7. Nothing nixes your chance of getting a job faster than sending out a cover letter that's full of misspellings.And when it's all done, hit send and hope for the best. But don't bug the company after you've sent the cover letter out with demands about why they haven't answered you.
