To remove the headliner on the 1998 Ford Escort, first remove both of the visors by removing their screws. Then, remove the trim from around the edges of the interior roof. Then, pull the headliner down from the ceiling.

The part is called a headliner, the material is usually cloth glue to a foam/composite board.

Plastic trim on the front and rear windshields needs to be removed. Visors need to be removed Courtesy lights on headliner need to be removed Seatbelt clip needs to be removed This will allow headliner to come down to expose the roof. 10mm bolts hold it in place. My roof was (is) stuck open, and There appears to be a phantom snag on the passanger side of the roof. The entire roof is loose and swings around, but pivots on that passanger side and won't come out. Driving me crazy. Can't close roof or pull sunshade out of the way to inspect.
