Actually you can't, because an ac unit does not cool the air, it removes the moisture from the air that in turn cools it. An ac unit is actually a de-humidifier.
The evap puts moist air in and th AC take moisture out. So you are making the AC work harder
The Auto button will turn on the AC then set your desired temperature.
This usually happens because the AC is set to heat and not cool. If it is set to cool then get it checked out by a qualified AC technician.
