Once you have recovered the barrel of gunpowder from the Great Wall of China (1593 AD, 6 o'clock on the time device), it should "automatically" go off when you click on the rocks in front of the cave at the Viking island (831 AD, 2 o'clock). It cannot be used anywhere else.
