Pouring about a cup of salt in the washing machine along with the dye helps to set the color. Allow the agitator to mix the color in the hot water thoroughly and the salt to dissolve before adding your fabric. Rinse the fabric twice (or until water is clear) in cold water. Cold water also helps to set the color and rinse out any color that didn't "take". Rinsing will also prevent bleeding when in the future the fabric needs to be washed. Good luck.

What is the difference between Rit Liquid Dye and Rit Powder Dye and which one is best to dye denim jeans?

The powder may not completely dissolve and cause spots. Either one will dye to the same color. Putting salt in the dye bath will help set the color.

I want to do a cosplay but How do you dye a Wool Skirt?

This is how I dye all of my fabrics for cosplay. If it's not already white, get a decent sized plastic tub (can be found at any dollar store) and bleach it until it is white or mostly white. (Note: Only use enough bleach to get the fabric completely submerged). When it's done bleaching, wash it with normal fabric cleaner as you would for any normal load of clothes. While the bleach get cleaned off, dispose of the bleach and wash the tub. When it's cleaned, fill with water (about double the level the bleach was at), and put in the color dye you want to dye the fabric. Fabric dye can be found at any crafts store or online. Add enough of the dye for the water to turn a little bit darker than the shade you want. When the fabric is done washing, put it in the dye. The duration depends on the type of fabric, so check the color of the fabric frequently until it's the color you want. When it's the color you want, hang it up outside to dry over newspaper (to prevent dripping onto your floors). When It dries, wash again to set the color and you're done.

Why does dark laundry come out with white?

The dye in dark clothing comes out regardless of the presences of white clothing. When a dark item is dyed, the manufacturer sets the dye to make sure that it stays on the fabric, but some of the dye doesn't set. When this item is washed, some of that un-set dye may come off and redeposit itself on surrounding clothes. If the dye redeposits on a dark item, the dye will not be visible, but if the dye redeposits on a white item, the dye will change the color. It is generally not permanent, but sometimes the heat of the dryer can set the newly redeposited dye into clothes.

Can you set a natural dye using Vinegar?

Yes, but you need to be careful. The acidic pH of the vinegar can change the color of your dye. reds, yellows and oranges become brighter, and purples can change to reds. Test the color and mordants for changes before you use any mordant to set your fabric color.Safer options are using salt and cold water. This allows the pores to evenly distrbute the dyed material and set in the pores.

How do you remove dye from fabric?

Removing dye can be hard but not impossible. If the stain is fresh then you can run it under hot water for removal. If the dye is set then you can try bleaching the area. Lemon juice can help too if you don't want to use bleach.

How do you make natural dye step by step?

Collect your plant materials when they are at their peak of color. Flowers should be fresh, Berries should be very ripe, not withered.2 Chop all plant materials into small pieces (inch or smaller) and place them into a large pot or pan that you are willing to sacrifice to the cloth dyeing craft. You will not be able to use it for cooking again.3 Measure the amount of plant material and place twice as much water as plant material into the pot with the plant material.4 Bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer it, stirring occasionally, for at least an hour.5 Strain out the plant material and set the dye bath aside.6 Place your fabric into a color fixative bath such as salt water (1 part salt to 16 parts water) or a vinegar bath (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water).7 Allow the fabric to absorb the color fixative mix and simmer it for an hour.8 Remove the fabric from the fixative and wring it out thoroughly.9 Place the wet fabric into the dye mixture and simmer it until the desired color is achieved. The dry product will be lighter than the wet product, so go for a slightly darker color when wet.10 Remove the fabric from the dye bath with rubber gloves. (You want to dye the cloth, not your hands.)11 Wring the fabric thoroughly and hang it up to dry.

How can you treat cloth so the dye will not come out when being washed?

There will always be some dye loss when washing, it's the nature of the beast. However if you wash the item with vinegar and salt, it will "set" the color of the fabric. The "recipe" is one cup of vinegar to a gallon of water and one fourth cup of salt. Simmer the item gently for about 15 minutes, then wash regularly.

What are the causes of the fabric color difference and garment color difference?

The fabric color difference: one same roll fabric have left, center, right color difference(incluing dark or light edge), back-to-face shading; one same batch fabric have color difference between roll and roll, piece and peice, and out of color sample(including the sample color and product color difference, contracted sample and product color difference). The garment color difference: one same garment, different part have different color, the same part have color difference betwwen up, down, left and right; one set garment have color difference between piece and piece; one same shipment, different carton have color difference, different piece have color difference. The garment color difference is because of the fabric color difference, if the fabric has fewer color difference problem, garment is the same, otherwise, the garment have more problems. But some fabric color difference problems can be overcomed or lower the serious degree in the garment production process, some problems are difficult to overcome, the only way is not to use these fabric. So, the relation of the fabric color difference and garment color difference is not a simple causal relationship, but complex internal relations. By YULONG FR tex

How do you set the color in fabric so it won't fade when you wash it?

My grandmother soaked the fabric in salt water before washing in detergent. Unfortunately, I don't know how much salt she used in the water.

I have a vest that is 55 percent dacron and 45 percent polyester it is a ugly green is it possible to bleach it white than dye it black Would that destroy it how would I go about doing it?

While I'm not sure about dacron, I do know that polyester does not bleach or dye as well as natural fabrics, such as cotton. But I have dyed many items with great success, so what I would do is to use a commercial (Rit Dye makes one) color remover, then dye it afterwards. The color will need to be lightened as much as possible in order for the vest to take the dye. After lightening it as much as possible (you may have to do the color removal process at least 2 times), use several boxes or bottles of the black dye. Be sure to use extremely HOT water, and if you do it in your washer, set the wash (dye) cycle to repeat before the spin/rinse cycle. You can dye it on the stove, using a large pot in boiling water, but you will have to stir it continuously during the process to ensure even coloring. The instructions on the dye containers will give more detailed instructions, depending on the brand you use. After dyeing it though, be sure to wash with only other like colors, because the dye will bleed onto other garments, especially during the first few washings afterwards.
