A typewriter is like a keyboard without the computer. The computer keyboard is based on the typewriter. To use it you put the paper in the top bale and rolled it so the keys could hit the paper. There was a ribbon of ink between the paper and the keys, so when you hit a key the typewriter ribbon hit the paper with the letter inked. If correction was needed the paper had to be changed.

The margin is the boundary where text normally begins. From that point, if the text is moved to the right, it is indented. Sometimes, the beginning of a paragraph is indented in a letter or a book. This paragraph is an example of how the first line is indented and the rest of the lines of the paragraph begin at the left-hand margin. There is also a margin on the right-hand side of the page, not to mention the top and the bottom of the page also have margins. Indenting tends to highlight a line or an entire section of text may be indented to set it apart from the rest of the body of text.
To set margins on a Smith Corona Typewriter Wordsmith, you can use the margin setter keys. Press and hold down the "mar" key and move the carriage to the desired position using the spacebar. Release the "mar" key to set the right margin. Follow the same steps for the left margin using the "lmar" key.
There should be a margin-set lever that can be slid further in or out to alter the travel of the carriage. The margin-set lever is often located next to the larger carriage release lever.
