Have a 20 gallon tank, or use a Tub. You can use a locking lid, clips, or luggage straps to keep the snake from escaping. Cover the bottom with about 2 inches of substrate like eco earth, newspaper, aspen. Have 2 hides 1 for each side of the tank they like them small where they can barely fit. Have a water bowl large enough for the snake to completely fit in in the cage and clean it daily to prevent disease.

Use a UTH (Under tank Heating pad) do not use a human heating pad! You can use a heat lamp or CHE(Ceramic Heat Emitter) and put it on one side of the cage. You can use multiple methods! (I use a UTH and CHE both on seperate thermostats to prevent it from getting to hot)

Pick one side to be the cool side and one to be the Warm side. It is important to have a warm side and cool side to allow thermoregulation. NO "HOT ROCKS!" These will burn your snake. Put the UTH or CHE or Light on a Thermostat designed for heating pads/ lighting. Use a Thermometer with probes to determine the proper temps of the hot and cool side. If using a screen top covering the top with Duct Tape and aluminum foil will help keep the temps and humidity right(remember to cut a few holes for air circulation) Also if you are using a light you will need to cut a hole for the light to sit on the screen.

Never let the temps get too hot or too cold.

Feeding they should be fed in their cages around every 5-6 days. A rodent about the same girth as the snake.

~80F (ambient temps)

~90F (basking temps)

75 or below is unhealthy

Night drops in temps are not necessary or desired

Why are ball pythons called ball pythons?

they call them ball pythons because they roll up into a ball when they are frightened but they call them royal pythons because in all the palaces in Africa they kept them around to eat the rodents hence the name royal python Edit: They got the name Royal Python from their latin name of Python regius - LONG before they got the nick-name 'ball python'

How long can a pet ball python be?

The ROYAL Python (to give the correct name from its latin name of Python Regius) can grow to a length of up to 60 inches. ALL my adult specimens are well over 55 inches ! Incidentally - The Royal Python only got the tag of 'ball python' from its defensive posture of curling itself into a ball when threatened !

Is a ball python a carnivore?

Yes ... they eat pinkies (infant mice) up to rats ... depending on the size of the ball.

What is a ball python temperament?

the ball python's temperament unless it's shedding or it hasn't eaten for more than two months. Well, the Ball Python was orignally named the "Royal Python". It acquired it's name sake "Ball" because when it was threatened, it curled up into a ball and behaved in a very docile manner; This is the reason these snakes are so popular here and in other countries. There is no other "Python" that is so easy to engage, train, and love. Can you kiss a python on the lips? I can :-) and so what, I am immune to sowmanilla now. Ball Pythons are very sweet and everyone should get to know one. If you are afraid, get the "F" over it. Life is too short. Snake lover I am.

Can you cage a baby ball python with a grown ball python?

no <----wrong answer. please see below. The CORRECT answer is yes. I have two ball pythons and one is fully grown (about 8 years old) and I bought a just hatched baby ball python from a friend. They have been in the same cage for 3 years now. There are some "issues" that arise from this. The larger python will NOT share its hide hole with the little python. To alleviate this, put two hide-a-ways in the tank. Not only will it give your bigger python "options" but it will help cluster the cage and make both snakes more comfortable in their artificial environment. After a couple months the larger python should be used to the smaller one, but you will notice that they will tend to stay seperated sometimes. This is caused by the inherent terratorial nature that exists in almost all living creatures. With that said, it will happen less and less until it comes to a point that when you pick up one, you tend to pick up both of them. To the person who answered this question, please only answer questions you have researched or have experience with first. You may have caused someone to buy an unnecessary tank. If you don't know, don't answer.
