The Spanish conjugation "estaba" is the first or third person singular imperfect form of "estar" (to be). It usually is translated as "was" or "were. (e.g. Yo estaba en el supermercado. "I was in the supermarket.") This would imply that I was in the market on a continuing or habitual nature, perhaps as employment. Fui en el supermercado is also translated the same way, but the preterite form is for a one-time action completed in the past. This implies "I was in the market, but only that time."
