He either lives in an apartment (or room of some sort) on either side of the breezeway or he's a street person and lives under the breezeway (out of the weather) and that could be the reason he doesn't want you hanging around there because he's embarrassed, there are seedy characters that can hang around, etc. It's obvious his family and himself don't get along. Living out on the streets is a hard life. I would communicate more with him as you have a right to know what is going on and what he's up too. I am not accusing him of this, but if he is living this sort of life he could be into selling drugs, etc., to make money in some way.
