Sometimes the word "American" is abbreviated "Am" Since the word is an adjective and would usually be used in a phrase with one or more other words, the whole phrase is sometimes abbreviated. For example, the air carrier, American Airlines, is often abbreviated as "AA". An "A" alone will not work as an abbreviation for "American," by "AA" in the context of air travel will communicate "American Airlines."
The spelling is correct, though in most cases it would have a capital letter at the start. Also remember that American refers to many countries not just the USA.
