Cut your cants to length first. Using wedges start at one end and split the cant in half, then in quarters then until you have your preferred size. It is ok to start on the end but work down the side. It usually takes three or more wedges to split 7' cants. It doesn't take much practice to become an expert with redwood.

How to Build Redwood and Stone Fencing?

Incorporating stone and wood in a fencing design can produce an attractive and innovative landscape feature. Redwood is the ideal lumber when blending the two materials because it resists moisture that collects in the stone and the mortar joints during rains, as well as when the property is watered. The redwood fencing pieces can be standard 6 wide x _ thick, since these will attach to the 2 thick redwood railings. and also can be easily cut to conform to the stonework if desired. The redwood fencing posts could be standard 4 x 4 posts, or larger if the design suggests that type of look. There are numerous possibilities for a design scheme that incorporates wood with stone. One design might feature redwood fencing that spans between stone pilasters. The fencing may be full height or rest on a course of stone that spans across the bottom of each fencing section. In this design there would be anchor bolts that are set in the stone pilasters, and protrude enough to fasten the redwood fence rails. The fencing would then be attached to the rails using galvanized deck screws.Another design might have redwood posts with stonework at the base and extending across the fencing sections as well. With this design the redwood fencing atop the stone may be as little as 3 or 4 feet in height, with the stonework making up the balance of a 6’ high fence. For a garden fence, the overall height of this design could be adjusted to a lower dimension if desired.Where the posts are set in concrete, the stonework would attach to the posts using metal lath with mortar. The benefit of setting the posts first would certainly be in the integrity of the fencing construction. However, some fencing contractors might elect to install post anchors as an alternate system. The idea is to create a design that complements the landscaping and adds unique texture to the overall exterior design of the property.
