How do you start a duel on red dead redemption?

Duels can only happen in the single player campaign mode. But, there are sometimes strangers that are randomly in the town and ask you to duel and when you accept the duel start. The duel is just a normal dead eye but versus just one person and u get a few seconds to choose all the spots where you shoot before you run out of time and the other person shoots.

Before you see the "Draw" sign and enter Dead Eye, move the right analog stick down. Look at your right hand when you do this; notice how your hand moves closer to your gun. This will greatly improve your chances of winning.

When you see the "Draw" text appear, move your right analog stick up (this may be down, depending if you have y-axis inverted). Press RT/R2 when the cursor turns white. Do that several times and you will demolish your opponent. To disarm your opponent and gain positive honor points, shoot his hand.

Skill tip: The later you draw, the more accurate you are, but the less you fire vise versa.

You cannot challenge anyone to a duel. Only you can get challenged to a duel. When you see a blue dot in a city and hear something like "Hey you! Get your a** over here!", those people are people who think they can beat you in a duel to show off their skills. Approach them and accept the duel. The go to the yellow "X". When in the duel, pick your shots on the enemy that would kill him, like the head, and/or heart. And when it says "DRAW", hold LT and if you place your marker on his arm first, you will automatically fire and win the duel by disarm. You can kill him when he's holding his hand in pain and you won't lose honor or have wanted level. The bar on your right side of the screen indicates how much damage you have marked on him as you place markers. Whoever has the highest bar will fire first. Therefore, your bar must always be higher than his in order to win. Your bar is blue and the challenger's bar is red. Hoped this helps.

in multiplayer you can 1 go to the game list and select gang shootout or gang match

2 go to the roof of the armadillo saloon and kill a bunch of cops

or 3 do a gang hideout clallange

in single player (refer to steps 2 and 3 under multiplayer)

1 wait in armadillo or mcfarlanns ranch for a posse to cross the town

or 2 kill people and wait for cops

There are people on the side of the road that call you over. The first one is by the entrance of McFarlenes ranch. The people aren't always there though.

Hold down L2 to lock onto your opponent then punch with R2. You are then able to tackle your opponent by down buy pressing triangle.

i have found that using a revolver is better than using a pistol in a duel
