you can use charcoal, matches with tinder, oil and matches, FLAMETHROWER, NUKE... okay the last 3 werent serious, never use oil and matches, FLAMETHROWER, or a NUKE. but lighter fluid works well with a match or a lighter. if you know a boy scout they are bound to know some good tricks. have fun with your fire :P just kidding take caution fire can be very dangerous.

Basically, just like you would start a campfire. First start by wadding newspaper in small loose wads, filling about a 12" diameter area. Then place small dry twigs around the newspaper mound making sure that they have space in between them so that air can freely pass through. when they have caught use slightly bigger peice's and so on till you have the bigger peice's burning.

NEVER USE A FIREPLACE WITHOUT CLEANING THE CHIMNEY FIRST! creosote builds up and catches fire often starting the house on fire.

To start a camp fire you need to start with some dry kindling and some dry wood and something to start the kindling on fire. Place the kindling in the center of the fire pit and place the smallest pieces of wood around it forming a teepee type structure around it. Light the kindling and watch to make sure it starts the wood on fire. You may need to add more kindling if it doesn't start right away.
