before striking a match you must build the mound. Ball up a few pieces of newspaper and put on the grate. stack the smallest sticks on top of the newspaper. put a decent sized log to the front and another log in the rear. stack medium sized sticks spanning the two logs.Light the newspaper. As the fire burns down slowly move the front log toward the back. The fire needs air so don't jam things too tightly. Enjoy.

I assume that you have neither a lighter or a match. There are also magnesium fire starters, which are "bars" of magnesium which you strike with a nail or rock to create sparks to start a fire. Or, you can use a magnifying glass or sometimes other pieces of glass (such as the bottom of a soda bottle) to concentrate the sun's rays onto a single point to heat an object to the point it begins burning. Another option is friction, often using a piece of hard wood and a piece of softer wood.

There are hundreds of ways to start a fire without matches. Swedish Firesteel or BlastMatch are very popular. However, the most reliable way to do it without tools or supplies is by using a bow drill. You don't need a knife to make one and can use your shoelace for the bow string. It usually takes 30 mins to an hour the first time you use one. But, it can save your life if you get lost.

There are dozens of ways to make fire without matches, lighters, or anything we would consider a 'fire-making' tool. So many that I cannot possibly explain them all in this one space. But I can start you off in the right direction for further research. First of all, it depends on your resources. You can use a convex lens (like a magnifying glass) or a parabolic lens (like in a flashlight) to concentrate a beam of light on some tinder. You can generate a spark from a battery by using metal to connect the positive and negative ends (like a car battery and jumper cables). A very clever way to do this is by touching a metal scouring pad to a 9v battery. Most camping and outdoor stores carry some sort of spark generating device such as a ferro rod, magnesium block, or flint striker. If you have no modern supplies, you have to go old school. Most primitive fire methods involve friction, such as the bow drill, the fire plow, the hand drill, and the fire saw. You can also use your body heat to melt a clear piece of ice into a convex lens. These are just a few common techniques. There are many more fire-making methods as well as countless variations.

One way is too put some steel wool on top of a piece of cotton or wool and touch a 10000 volt battery to the steel wool. There may be a few sparks, so take safety precautions.

What happens when you start a fire with a moist wood?

Trying to start a fire with damp wood is very difficult. When I backpack I always carry some tinder (dry shavings) to start a fire. Wet wood will not burn unless the fire is hot enough to evaporate the water that is in the wood. You can burn damp wood on an already burning fire but it will not burn as hot. Wet wood tends to smoke a lot and may go out on a small fire that does not have a good coal base. I have had to use damp wood to start a fire before but I had to shave down the wood until I found dry wood inside. Once you get a small fire started gradually add wood until you can get a hot fire. Too much wet wood at once can put out a fire. Not a good thing when you are cold and wet. Be patient.
