As an entrepreneur in New Brunswick, Canada, I started a new business several years ago with help from a government program.

The first thing you need is to have an idea - what do you want to sell, or what service do you want to provide? Is it something people need or want?

Secondly, I recommend you check your area to see if there are any government programs or organizations that can assist you in starting a new business. In

Canada, inquire within the Community Business Development Corporation (CBDC). They have several programs that may be able to help you get started.

Talk to your local Chamber of Commerce, and ask if there is any other organizations that can help you with the process of starting a business. There are many organizations that can give you information, tips, advice, and show you the next steps. They can even help you build your Business Plan.

Thirdly, start writing a business plan. (There are many resources online that can help you with that.) The business plan is a guidebook that you will write that will help you determine if your business is a valid one, and will include much research and observation from your competition and target market.

What is your competition? Who is your target market? If someone else is doing similar, learn what you can about how they go about it.

Fourthly, I recommend finding a trusted and successful person in business in your area. Get them to review your business plan or give you feedback.

Fifthly, you are now ready to register your name with your government. Do you have a company name in mind for your new business? Will it be a sole-proprietorship or a partnership or incorproated? There are advantages to each.

In Canada, you must first get a Name Search performed that checks to see if your proposed business name is unique. It must be unique, and not similar, to another name in your province. An authorized name search agent will give you a NUANS report, which you will need when submitting your paperwork to the Canadian government.
