First you need to know what you want to say in your essay - you can't get started and just ramble on and on. Decide which facts you want to include and what your total point is going to be. Then just start with a simple declaration of that point. For example, if you think family means rubbing blue mud in your naval, your first sentence should be "Family means rubbing blue mud in your naval."
