read up on basics "no-start" scenarios... ...everyone should have a manual for their vehicle(parts store or dealer), and a local library should have professional shop manuals available in the REFERENCE section for free...make copies of the appropriate sections...read up and good luck :)

Could be bad muffler bearings.
You might have a small leak in your heater core, had that problem with my 96 Jetta. Had to replace it.
Can you turn the shaft of the alternator by hand? Is it the original alternator? With the given information i would say that the alternator is in need of replacement.
Had the same problem with my GL. What I've heard is the back up blade in the shifting fork slips or falls out of line causing no contact when you shift into reverse. They have to replace reconnect thru transmission. 5 years without backup lights.
The Jetta's ECU / Computer is what shut it down. Most cars cant run with oil that's 200 degrees F hott mang........think about it....
