You start with a slip knot to secure your yarn to the needle. This is followed up by a process called casting on. There are a few different methods used to cast on stitches. Experiment to find which one works best for you. The KnittingHelp web site has some step by step directions to a couple of methods as well as videos. See the related link below.
* To start crocheting, you need to chain stitch a certain number of chain stitches, depending on how big you want your project to be. * Here is how to chain stitch: http://www.learntoknit.com/instructions_cr.php3
Before you cast on, you have to make a slip knot. This is the starting point for just about everything you will do in knitting. I'll try to describe it:
1. make a circle with the yarn 2. with your right hand, pull a loop through the circle 3. insert your needle through the loop 4. pull the loop to tighten and then slide it towards the top of the needle
Once you've done this, you can begin casting on the required number of stitches! :)
You generally start with a slip knot and then a chain.
Foundation chain. This is the first group of chains that you make at the start of a project.
My grandmother loves crocheting.

The broad category is "arts and crafts" with the subcategory of "sewing." Knitting and crocheting are considered hand crafts.
When crocheting you can increase by making two stitches in the same stitch. You can also make a stitch between two stitches.
