Start where the action begins. You can always add a flashback or have one character explain to another what happened before - your book or story needs to start at the beginning of the excitement!

If you make some kind of outline - it doesn't matter if it's a formal one typed out, or just a bunch of index cards stuck to your cork board - you can see what action needs to go where. Begin your story or book right where things start happening.

It doesn't matter what sort of story you're writing - start with the action.
Determine the most interesting way to introduce your story, to attract the attention and interest of a reader.
