This depends on how badly your intruder is backfiring? I thought my mix was off or I had bad current from the rectifier on my 92 800 she sounded like a machine gun was going off when I finally garaged her till i could check it out.
Turned out I needed a 5 dollar part there was an exhaust leak at the pipes the donut had burned out and was sucking cold air back in that close was not good.
Inspect your pipes when you first start up so you don't burn your hand. See if you feel any blow out around the heads or where the slip-ons connect.
If all is well try running some seafoam through the tank or very carefully into the air intake to clean out the carbs and upper end. It works miracles I swear. Put 1/4 bottle in my 3.1 gallon tank and swear I had more power right off like an octane booster. recommend adding some every couple months depending how much you ride It helps keep water condensation out of the fuel as well so a good idea if storing your bike for any time with fuel in it.
VERY likely your fuel mix is too lean. Adjust the air/fuel mix settings and it should fix it.
