Just basically not being active as you usually are, if you use to do lots of thing, such as when winter hits, people tend to get less exercise. This can really drop your metabolism depending on how much less exercise you do. Also when you exercise and when you eat effects your metabolism. Some of this might not always drop it very low but drop it and keep it low. I am not sure of this but it is likely your metabolism well drop dramatically if you do what I just mentioned, like eating and exercising(if you do any at all) at all different times each day, and not being consistent. It has been said before that eating less will trigger the body into thinking its being starved and thus lower its metabolism naturally. I have been trying to gain weight for years now and can't seem to even gain 10 lbs. I eat alot and also take supplements but i couldn't help noticing that when i didn't eat for a while, my weight only dropped a couple pounds. Its like it wants to stay within a certain range. It is something i am still trying to understand.

I'd just like to add to the above. If you are attempting to lower your metabolism in an attempt to gain weight then eating less is obviously not the best way to go about it.

Other ways to lower metabolism and gain weight are:

  • try not to do too much exercise
  • if you do exercise then do it at a slower rate so it does not raise the metabolism as mcuh
  • get plenty of sleep, your metabolism is lower when you are asleep
  • avoid tea, coffee, and pop or anything else with caffeine in it
  • avoid any foods known to raise metabolism

With respect to gaining weight you should split your meals up through out the day instead of having three square meals. Keeping your digestive system healthy to help you better absorb your food will help so use something like Activia.

You can reset your metabolism by going on a low-carb diet such as the Keto Diet. By burning ketones, and eliminating your excessive insulin release with sugar and carbs, your body will increase your metabolism, and burn fat.

You can also increase it by building up muscle mass. Muscle will burn more energy (calories) than fat. Do strength training as well as cardio.

We are having trouble understanding why you might want to do this, as your metabolic rate determines the robustness of your 'furnace,' and people in the developed world almost universally suffer from a low metabolism, leading to the hosts of health ills that we are dealing with today. Metabolism is probably more important than diet, at least in context.

An illustration that will also answer your question is that to lower your metabolic rate, just make your chief activity in a day Surfing on a couch, and avoid any strenuous movement whatsoever. Having others bring you broken food and hfcs drinks, rather than getting up to get them yourself, will hasten the process.

Not recommended for human beings.
