The creaking sound is caused as the old finish nails loose grip and start rubbing against the wood. In some cases this can be easily fixed by spraying the problem area with wd-40 as this lubricates the nail.
This will alleviate the creaking, but not fix it for good. If you are looking for a permanent solution you will need three things: A drill, a screw with a special break off head (can be found at most hardware stores), and wood putty that will match the chairs stain.
You will start by determining where the creak is coming from. Usually a wobbly or loose joint. Then drill a small pilot hole into that joint from the side of the wood opposite the joint. If the joint were a T you would drill from the top of the T into the line that goes down. The next step is to screw in the break off screw. If it starts to push the joint apart that is fine just unscrew it a bit, until you can pull the joint back together and screw it back in. This will cause a tighter joint. The next step is to break off the end of the screw cap and fill the remaining hole with the wood putty. Problem solved!
