Well, by using a method known as carbon dating, archaelogists are able to trace an artifact back to get an estimate on how old ity is. For example, archaelogist recently found 11000 year old fishing equipment in California. With this information, you can conclude that human life has been in the Americas for at least 11000 years, logically, you can assume, knowing that human kind migrated over the once frozen bering staight between Russia and Alaska, you know that they didn't have any transportation except for walking. Then they had to somehow get to the California shore, settle down and invent the fishing equipment adaquet for the waters of California. So you can probably confirm with those facts that human kind has been in America for at least 1100-12000 years and most people believe it has been longer. You can apply this knowledge to fossils of animals and plants too, and ponder the effects that said animal would have had on nature.

1. When that animal/plant lived. 2.What killed that animal/plant.
The fossil record provides evidence about the history of life and past environment on earth. The fossil record also shows that different groups of organism have changed over time.
A fossil record is a historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of Earth's crust.
Over the last hundred years, the fossil record has assisted in changing the understanding of the development of life on Earth to include a widespread acceptance of the scientific explanation of the evolution of living things.
