I find it pretty sketchy that your piercer didn't tell you anything about caring for a new piercing. Anyways, you want to rise it after every meal and before bedtime. So, about 5 times a day. Use either alcohol-free mouthwash or a saline solution to rinse. Use a new toothbrush. Once its less tender, gently use the toothbrush to clean the jewelry. i got my tongue peirced 2 weeks on Thursday and i had no swelling .. just take strong ibrobrophen or paracetamol and youll be fine just listen to your peircer about how to care for it and don't eat solids for the first 2 days and that will cause more swelling :)
