.PPtx (PowerPoint text) is not compatible with Windows Movie Maker.
The only way to take sentences from your PowerPoint presentation to add to your movie is by copying and pasting the text into the clip via the Titles and Credits feature.
Windows 7 version of Windows Movie Maker is actually an Essentials program called Windows Live Movie Maker. It is a stripped-down version of Windows Movie Maker v2.6. Though it doesn't have all the functionality and features of its predecessor, Windows Live Movie Maker does have Title and Credits, which is where you will find a box to place text into.
You can't do that in Windows Movie Maker. Of course you can use an animation, but you can't place it over a picture or video clip in the same project. You can do that in other video editing software applications, but not Windows Movie Maker. Sorry.
The Time-line is a the workspace in Windows Movie Maker. The Storyboard also has its place, but the time-line is the actual work area.

You can't reformat a Windows Movie Maker project file (.MSWMM). Conversion to Standard formats takes place during the mix-down (export) process of 'Publishing/Finishing/Saving' the movie.
You can't do that with Windows Movie Maker. The program is very basic with limited features. You can however, take a picture from a video with the 'Take Picture from Preview' feature in the 2.6 version of the program.

It sounds to me like you need to re-install Windows Movie Maker. You can download the version you want (v2.6 for Vista) or Windows Live Movie Maker (for Vista and 7) for free online. Simply Google: Windows Movie Maker and download the version your want. Install the program and test it out. It should work.
