Take your temperature first thing in the morning, upon waking. Keep a thermometer (any digital one will work, but some basal thermometers have a few extra features) by your bed, and take your temperature before getting out of bed. Keep your chart handy as well, to write it down before forgetting the number. It will vary by a few tenths of a degree. This is normal After ovulation there will be a thermal shift. Progesterone is a heat producing hormone, and will cause your bbt to be consistanly elevated by a few tenths of a degree. This isn't a good method to predict ovulation but, to see when it has occured. It is also a way of getting to know your body and finding a pattern, by using your chart as one of your tools. There are three fertility signs that are easily charted. BBT and also cervical position and cervical fluid.
