Then measure the volume of the coin by either measuring the radius of a face, square it, times it by pi and then time that by the depth. Or,if it is a funny shape fill a bucket up to the brim with water, place the coin in the bucket. Measure how much water is left to what was in their before and u will also have the volume. Then weigh it and divide the mass in grams by the colume cm cubed and u will have the density. If it matches the density that it should be then it is real but if it is not then it is a fake

The simple answer is that it's not that simple. Some more crudely-made counterfeits will be the wrong weight, have a dull color, have indistinct images, or make a clunking sound when dropped. Some really bad ones have ridiculous designs, like the famous "1865 Washington quarters" that are only off-date by 80 years, or the "1851 Indian head dollars" that carry the picture used on an Indian Head cent of 1860.

On the other hand some fakes can be almost indistinguishable from the real thing because the counterfeiters take time to ensure that the weight and design are accurate. In the case of extremely rare coins (e.g. an 1804 dollar) they may go to the extent of using the same metal alloy as the real coins, simply because the profit they make selling the bogus coins is many thousands of times the cost of the precious metal used.

If you have what appears to be an extremely valuable coin, it's usually best to do a bit of research first. For example, if you have a supposed 1861 Confederate 50¢ piece it's guaranteed to be a fake because only 4 were ever made and all are accounted for. OTOH if the coin is valuable but not so spectacularly rare it's less easy to determine. In that case you may have to spring for the money needed to have it evaluated by an expert in rare coins and counterfeits.

If the differences aren't obvious simply by looking at it, a real giveaway would be the weight. You can look up the correct weight for the coin in question, and if your coin doesn't match, it's fake (though if the coin is heavily worn, it would be slightly lighter than when it was first minted).
