A vet will always check the dogs hips when in for their regularcheckup. The vet can tell. You will notice the dog is not walking or running the same. If it is bad the dog may loose it's balance when turning and struggle when getting in and out of a dog house steps etc. They will not be able to run as fast and may wine if in pain. I have had two dogs with it and they couldn't even get in my truck as it progressed.

Not really, other than surgery. But there are treatments and behavior modifications that can be used to lessen its impact on a dog. Weight management, exercise, physical therapy, and glucosamine/chondriotin are some of these steps. Click on the 'Hip Dysplasia' link on this page to learn more.hip dysplasiaOne cure is surgery. If is the avenue of choice for your pocket book, it can be expensive. If it is caught early, our vet told us to make sure our dog got plenty of exercise. Strengthing the muscles helps keep the ball and joint closer together. Hip dysplasia can be extremely painful for dogs, so if this is your dogs problem, take him to the vet for a check up. They do have medication that will make your dogs life much more pleasent. Another answer:A few dogs i have observed with hip dysplasia have been alright without surgery, but it would be a good idea to try surgery. If the damage/pain is still low enough to where the dog does not lose its ability to walk and swim, you may think of asking a veterinarian if strengthening the leg is an option. Also:our dog takes glucosamine tablets and will be on them for practically life. It has made his life a whole lot better. the glucosamine helps to rebuild the cartilage on the ball and socket joint. i would recommend trying this before surgery.
